A welcome sign, Failte, in Irish, as we entered Westport today,
Chuck and Gerry at the Mall in Westport. This is the area around the river which flows through the heart of the town. Westport is a really lovely town and has been the worthy winner of our National Tidy towns competition on a number of occasions. The metal artwork beside them is the trophy for winning that particular contest.
Westport is the nearest town to St Patrick's holy mountain, Croagh Patrick, and here we have Chuck and Gerry pictured with the monument to our patron Saint. Very appropriate on this day, the eve of St Patrick's day.
We enjoyed a great lunch at the Castlecourt Hotel in the heart of the town.
Today un fortunately was an overcast day with a lot of low cloud around and here we have Chuck as we passed by St Patrick's holy mountain which was hidden in the low cloud. This was not the best day for photos and o-n top of that my camera gave me trouble.
Here we have a monument to the unfortunate famine victimes who died after walking all the way from Westport to Delphi Lodge in the hope of gaining visa's to escape the famine and travel to the USA. They were totally ignored and many of them died on the return walk back to Westport.
The lake in the valley at Delphi.
It was a little chilly today as you can see in this photo, which i took with the beautiful Lough Nafooey in the background in the heart of the famous JOyce country.
