If you are one of the lucky people who can afford to employ your own private driver and guide when you come to Ireland then you are indeed fortunate. What better way to travel than to be able to choose your own routes and your own timetable. How fortunate you are to be able to make alterations to your daily programs as you go. If you feel tired and need a little extra sleep you can do so as long as it does not impact in any major way on your destination later that day if you have to catch a show or whatever. How fortunate you are to be in the company you choose to be in yourself. How fortunate you are to be able to spend extra time in places that you suddenly find very much to your liking instead of rushing on somewhere else. How fortunate you are to be able to eat when you like and what you like. How fortunate you are to be able to spend time in those areas your ancestors left a long time ago and when you need that time to scout around seeking information that may lead to some wonderful discoveries. This is one of the areas that i always find so rewarding, especially when you do hit the jackpot. I have two ladies coming to me the week after next from the USA who are over the moon with excitement after i was able to locate the exact spot where their Grandparents lived. The ruins of the old home are still there and i know just how much that means to these ladies. They have spent 15 years trying to find them and when they gave me a little information i was able to find the place in less than a day. They were here themselves two years ago and were unable to find anything. You could say that i was lucky maybe but then maybe i just know a little more about how to go about things over here. As long as there is some concrete information you always have a chance. I am also a great believer in what is meant to happen will happen and in this case it could not happen for two nicer ladies. Do you believe in guardian angels? Well i do.... and a little prayer does no harm to anybody.
I also have an enquiry at the moment from a couple who are coming on their honeymoon. I have had honeymooners before and what a wonderful way it is to honeymoon. You can sit back in comfort and be chauffeured around at your leisure with nothing to do other than that which you want to do yourself. Are there drawbacks? Well here are some questions i am asked that obviously bother people.
Does our driver drink or smoke?
In my case...NO
In my case also,
What am i like?
Can i tell you myself? Well..i am very friendly, knowledgeable, mature but fun-loving in an immature way (like a lot of us Irish)...always ready to help in any way i can. Flexible within reason (as long as it does not spoil your plan). I am most reliable and will not let you down. I love my country especially the rural areas and especially the western sea-board, which to me is the real Ireland, but i do cover all of the republic and there is no place like it. I have a broad understanding of our history, our political situation and our economy. I am a native Irish speaker and a republican but one who believes in a political resolution to our divided country and abhor the use of violence here or anywhere else. I have a great interest in people and love the ones who come to Ireland full of enthusiasm about their visit. Many of my fellow travellers are from the USA and i really do find them great company. Their hunger to experience the magic of just being in Ireland is unmatched by anybody from anywhere else. Many of them have Irish roots but even those who do not still seem to be carried along by whatever it is that Ireland does to your soul. I have a special personal attachment to America as we have three sons there ourselves and we do travel there to see them, and many more of our friends also. I have been in the business long enough now to have aquired many new friends in the USA and i really do treasure them all. They have all added to my life and their gratitude for whatever it was that i did for them is something that i am very grateful for. Maybe some of them make a little noise but that could be the Irish in them.I love to see people enjoying themselves and do my best to help in any way i can and this in turn helps me to be "on holiday " with them. I love music and it has always been very much a part of my life. I like to write poetry, mostly rhyme, but i do not claim to be a poet. I am a husband, a father with three sons and two daughters and a wonderful wife. I live in the countryside in rural Ireland and i have a lovely modest home, cats and chickens (which belong mostly to my neighbour) and a lovely little pony called Taffy who is spoiled rotten.
Are we going to have the driver with us all the time?
This is always a question that people find hard to ask me so i always try to refer them to someone who has travelelled with me in order to give them the opportunity to ask these kind of questions.
No...i will be with you while we tour but anytime you want a break you can have it. You could have a walk in a scenic area or a stroll through some nice little town. You could take a lunch-break or an afternoon tea or coffee somewhere. The evenings are your own and i can also take time out. I am considerate of people having time to themselves and am not offended in any way if people want to be alone.
Am i a good driver?
My record is penalty free and accident free.
Is it very expensive?
Naturally it is more expensive than a bus tour but when you consider what you are getting and the extra benefits then it is not that much more expensive. It does not cost you anything to find out.
These are some of the main queries people would have but if you have any yourself just ask me.
Now i better get back to work as there are people looking for a private driver and personal guide to take them on that journey of a lifetime through the beautiful West of Ireland.
Are you coming my way yet?
Good Saturday morning !
ReplyDeleteOh Dave, you have mentioned many of the questions I get when people know that I have toured with you.
I just tell them to be honest with you. That your feelings are not that easily hurt. If they have certain concerns, they should just ask you. Who better?
I always enjoyed having lunch and/or supper with you. But, I'm often the only one, and I prefer someone to talk to. Especially when we stayed at Ashford Castle. It is dress-up time for supper. It was great to see you come down in a suit and tie. I loved it.
You will do whatever you can to help people enjoy their trip to the fullest.
The only bad trip I had to Ireland was my first one and that was a bus tour. I will never do that again as long as I have you to count on.
Thanks for all you have done.
Rita
