Yesterday, my group split up, as some wanted to spend the day in Galway city, while Barry and i left for Connemara, and Achill Island. The day was overcast, but the areas we passed through, more than made up for the absent sunshine. Above, you see the mist on the mountains in Connemara.
Connemara is a region of Bogs, glacial lakes, and rugged granite mountains. Above, we have Barry pictured on the roadside in Connemara, in the Maam valley.
Keane's pub, in the heart of the mountains, in the village of Maam.
The fjord, at Leenane in Killiary harbour, is the most westerly fjord in Europe. This cemetery is situated right on the edge of the fjord.
Croagh Patrick stands proudly overlooking Clew Bay, near Westport. This is St Patrick's Holy mountain where he spent forty days and forty nights in prayer. It is still a place of pilgrimage.
This sculpture is a memorial to the victims of the famine, who travelled on famine ships to foreign lands during the great famine back in the eighteen hundreds, and stands just outside Westport on the Louisburg road near Croagh Patrick.
This great memorial to St Patrick, stands in the centre of Westport.
Barry had visited Achill many years ago, and the deserted famine village on Achill Island, had impressed him then, and he just had to come back there to revisit it yesterday. The remains of the abandoned cottages are now just grey stones, all that remains of the cottage walls. They stretch in a long line about half way up the hill, as you can see in this photo, Barry was not the only one interested in walking up to see them.
Barry, pictured with Minaune mountain and Keel Bay in the background. Achill is a very special place and well worth a visit.
