The sun was shining in the West of Ireland today despite a negative forecast for the day. Sometimes i think we are better off to ignore forecasts, especially when they are for three to four days ahead. When it comes to long range, i think that you can take them with a pinch of salt. Only last week we were forecast lovely weather for Wednesday and Thursday, and Wednesday was the day we were hit with torrential rain which devastated many areas in the south of the country destroying homes and businesses. So much for the forecast. Yesterday the east Coast of the USA was hit by a freak storm which did a huge amount of damage and was not predicted. Maybe we should all stick to Old Moores Almanac.

                                                The Killarney Plaza Hotel


I was in Killarney again last week and really enjoyed my stay there, as usual. I stayed at the Killarney Plaza Hotel, one of my favourite hotels. The location in the heart of the town is superb and i always find the staff most helpful and polite. The food there is really good also and the Plaza Grill bar is excellent with really competetive prices for a tasty range of dishes. The sea-food chowder there is as good as it gets, and a meal in itself. If lamb shank is on the menu then that is a real treat. The breakfasts in the hotel offer a huge range of choices from fresh fruit to porridge, or oatmeal, as many from the USA would say. You have cheeses, Yogurts, cold meats, the full Irish breakfast with bacon and sausage and eggs, scrambled or fried, pancakes and waffles with maple syrup, mushrooms, toast, and of course plenty of good coffee and tea and juices.That should keep you going for the day. The rooms in the Plaza are also excellent and the leisure centre with Gym and Pool, steam room and sauna, give you that extra facility for enjoyment, especially if it raining.

If you are looking for a place to have a really nice snack, or a good breakfast, or indeed a good meal that will not bust your budget, then Der O'Sullivan's Deli in the main street in Killarney is a great place to go. I had a really nice steak with chips (as we say) and salad and it cost less than Euro 10-00. I thought that that was great value.

Here you see the Deli area at the front of the shop, the restaurant is at the back end and there is plenty of room in that nice clean and cosy area. The staff are also most helpful.

The Deli offers a great selection of take away foods, or, as the Americans say, "To Go". Not only can you get your picnic lunch here but you can get the full kit for your picnic, utensils, cups etc, for a small refundable deposit. This is a great facility for anybody heading off for the day hiking or cycling or just driving to the beach somewhere.
