A river in the heart of Connemara, famous for its mountains, boglands, rivers and valleys, wonderful seascapes, and of course for having been the location and center for that best of Irish movies, the Quiet Man, which starred everybody's hero, John Wayne, and the beautiful, and very Irish, Maureen O'Hara. It was also one of the worst affected areas during the famine, 1845 to 1849.
Do you recognise yourself here? A group of my happy traveling companions seated on the low wall at Slea Head on the Dingle peninsula. In the background you can see the Blasket Islands, which have a strong association with Springfield Mass, and Hungry Hill, as many of the people who eventually had to give up their lives on the Islands, due to the severe conditions, made their way to Springfield to start their new life. I have had the good fortune to meet many of their descendants through my touring business, along with so many more Irish Americans.
I always feel moved by this picture of this old famine time house on the Dingle peninsula, as i can picture a mother, or a wife, sitting inside that window, and looking out into the wild Atlantic as she waited, and prayed, for the safe return of her husband, or sons, or indeed both, during another raging storm. They were all fishermen and sheep farmers in this area, and life was hard. I will certainly bring you to see this place, as it is one of the most beautiful scenes at Slea head on the Dingle peninsula, and also overlooks the Blasket Islands,
