Today was the begining of another one of my tours with a lovely couple all the way from Arizona. Our adventure began in the City of Galway, as they had spent their first two days in Dublin on their own, and were now all set for their tour of what i always consider to be the real Ireland, the wild and rugged west and the wild Atlantic Way. The Atlantic seaboard has most of the poor lands and it was the area, where the famine in the eighteen hundreds wreaked havoc, as these areas, due the the poor nature of the land were unable to continue to
produce the potatoes that provided the people with their basic and most important food, the potato.
On their arrival i brought them on their tour of the city of Galway .
The picture here shows Jose and Dawn standing in front of the remaining wall of the Lynch home in the center of the city, and in the background the window, from which the chief magistrate Lynch hung his own son for the murder of a foreigner who had an affair with the fiance of Lynch's son. Nobody else volunteered to hang the man as they felt that he deserved it after the way he had taken advantage of that girl, so lynch had to do it himself. It was as a result of this that the term "Lynching" was derived i the English language.
Tomorrow we continue our adventure as we make our way into the area i call God's country, the area where the movie "The Quiet Man", which starred the great John Wayne and the beautiful Maureen O' Hara, the land of Connemara.
Please feel free to come along with us and enjoy. So many of the inhabitants fled this area during and post the famine and were never
to return to Ireland.
